Strong Noise Effects in one-dimensional Neutral Populations
Strong Noise Effects one-dimensional Neutral Populations
2011/1/5
The dynamics of well-mixed biological populations is usually studied by mean-field methods and weak-noise expansions. Similar methods have been applied also in spatially extended problems, relying on ...
Theoretical and computational tools that can be used in the clinic to predict neoplastic progression and propose individualized optimal treatment strategies to control cancer growth is desired. To dev...
The Bonds of Laughter: A Multidisciplinary Inquiry into the Information Processes of Human Laughter
Multidisciplinary Inquiry Information Processes Human Laughter
2010/11/15
A new core hypothesis on laughter is presented. It has been built by putting together ideas from several disciplines: neurodynamics, evolutionary neurobiology, paleoanthropology, social networks, and...
The Value of Information for Populations in Varying Environments
Information Populations Varying Environments
2010/11/15
The notion of information pervades informal descriptions of biological systems, but formal treatments face the problem of defining a quantitative measure of information rooted in a concept of fitness...
Growth of a population of bacteria in a dynamical hostile environment
Growth population bacteria dynamical hostile environment
2010/11/15
We study the growth of a population of bacteria in a dynamical hostile environment corresponding to the immune system of the colonised organism. The immune cells evolve as subcritical open clusters of...
Population Structure and Cryptic Relatedness in Genetic Association Studies
Population Structure Cryptic Relatedness Genetic Association Studies
2010/11/16
We review the problem of confounding in genetic association studies, which arises principally because of population structure and cryptic relatedness. Many treatments of the problem consider only a si...

Recent developments in extracting and processing biological and clinical data are allowing quantitative approaches to studying living systems. High-throughput sequencing, expression profiles, proteomi...
Evolutionary game theory in growing populations
Evolutionary game theory growing populations
2010/11/15
Existing theoretical models of evolution focus on the relative fitness advantages of different mutants in a population while the dynamic behavior of the population size is mostly left unconsidered. We...
In behavioral ecology some authors regard the innateness concept as irretrievably confused whilst others take it to refer to adaptations. In cognitive psychology, however, whether traits are 'innate' ...
