在持续发生的全球气候变化背景下，生态系统面临发生突变的风险，从而造成生态系统诸多服务功能的退化甚至丧失。例如热带雨林可能因为持续升高的气温引发火灾转变为热带稀树草原，温带草原可能因为持续的降水减少转变为荒漠，健康湖泊水体因为持续的氮磷输入导致突然崩溃等。预警生态系统发生状态转变是当前面临的重大挑战，也是相关领域的研究前沿。
